A total of 579 officers and soldiers are currently facing
courtmartials at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Garrison, Abuja, as well as
81 Division in Lagos.
While 473 of the accused officers and soldiers
are being tried in Abuja, 106 others are being courtmartialled in Lagos.
The acting Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Colonel Sani
Usman, who gave the figures at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, said
the primary objective of setting up the court-martials was to ensure
quick dispensation of justice as well as the restoration of discipline
and professionalism in the military.
He said: “There are currently two separate courtmartials going on in
Army Headquarters Garrison and 81 Division Nigerian Army, with a view to
ensuring quick dispensation of justice, discipline and
professionalism.”
He attributed the recent string of successes recorded in the
counterinsurgency war in the North-East to capacity building of troops
which, he said, was demonstrated in the successful training of 481
personnel of the Armed Forces and the police, who constitute the “elite
force” turning the tide against Boko Haram.
