Five scrap dealers arrested for stealing railway lines


Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, have arrested five scrap dealers for allegedly stealing 28 iron ballasts meant for rail lines in some parts of the metropolis.
The suspects have been identified as Hameed Atairu (25), Akeem Muritala (23), Lawal Muritala (25), Tunde Olatunji (27) and Sarafa Ishola (38), driver of the bus used by the suspects.
The suspects, who claimed they were scrap metal dealers, were intercepted inside their Vanagon bus marked J J J 929 EL by RRS operatives around 1:15am on Friday at Agege area of the State.
A police source said: “The suspects lied to the police that an official of the Nigerian Railway Corporation sold the iron to them. But during a preliminary investigation by the police, it was discovered that the irons were stolen by the suspects from where they were kept for use by Nigerian Railway Corporation. Three among them claimed they were ex-convicts. They claimed to be scrap dealers. They said they raised N35, 000, 00 to pay for the iron ballast.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the arrest of the suspects.
Famous-Cole said: “The suspects and the exhibits recovered from the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence Investigation Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, for further investigation.”
