Lagos Government has arrested seven
street traders for violating the state environmental law in Maryland, Ojota,
Bank Anthony Way, Ogba and Mile 12 axis of the state and has concluded .
The seven suspect arrested by the
Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) are; Ebele Ejike , 24 years,
Usman Marafa, 19 , Nwanboyin Eletus, 17, Aliu Wasab, 30 , Yunusa Mosuru, 25 ,
Muritala Lawal , 22, Nwani Ogbonnaya, 26.
Speaking with New Telegraph in their
office, Public Affairs Officer of the LAGESC, Mrs. Alabi Ramat, said that the
agency officials carried out an enforcement exercise to dislodge traders from
hawking and selling wares on the state street in order to protect their lives
and pave ways for the free-flow of traffic on the Maryland, Ojota, Bank Anthony
Way, Ogba and Mile 12 axis of the state.
According to the agency
spokesperson, the exercise was to rid the streets off street trading and
provide conducive environment for the people of the state.
Alabi enjoined members of the
public, particularly traders to desist from either hawking goods on the main
roads, saying that the agency would not relent in enforcing every dictates of the
Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Laws.
She said that government welcomes
anybody who comes to the state to look for living but the person must abide by
the law of the land for their own safety.
Speaking with the Correspondent, one
of the suspects, Nwani Ogbonnaya, said that he sale phones accessories at the
traffic road and that he is not aware of the law against selling in the
traffic.
He noted that it is not up to one
month in the state and resorted hawking on the traffic to making living.
Ogbonnaya said don’t have enough
money rent shop because he makes N2000 or more daily depends how
the sales was.
Another suspect, Yunusa Mosuru from
Kano state said that his sale car wrapper and also not aware that it is against
the law of the land to trade on the street.
One the suspects who climes innocent
of the offence arrested for, Ebele Ejike, he said that he supplies shoes to
customers when contacted.
“My madam gave him a box of shoes to
supply our customer in Maryland. As I was walking along the road the officials
of the agency saw him and stopped him. Before I know what is happening I was
pushed into their vehicle until they brought me here, I am still asking them,
what my offence is”, he said.
He appealed to the agency to allow
him go because he is innocent of offence he was accused of.
The
newspaper learnt that if the suspects are found guilty, they would be fined the
sum of N10, 000 or face 2 months imprisonment.
