Police arrest man impersonating governor’s aid

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested Dr Peter Bushing, who claims to be aid to Cross River State Governor Professor Ben Ayade.

The suspect was alleged to have been using that gimmick to defraud victims millions of naira. Posing as the governor’s aid, he would promise his victims juicy contracts for money.

The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said police were already investigating the suspect, who was already in their custody.

According to Inuwa, Bushing was arrested after he was reported to have collected about N2million from two people in Obudu, Ayade’s home town, promising to ensure that they got contracts from the government to recoup their money.

Inuwa further said: “The man was arrested after somebody complained that he collected about N2million from two people in Obudu with a promise to give contracts to them. He told the victims that he works with the governor. He also told them whatever he tells the governor, was what he would do. Right now, he is in prison because he had been arraigned and court remanded him in prison. Although he is not here, but we doubt very much if he works with the government.”

Our correspondent, however, gathered that Bushing was arrested with over 300 company profiles which he uses in convincing his victims. He was known for always promising them contract from State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and state Ministry of Health.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Christian Ita, said the suspect was never known to have worked with the governor. Ita said that the present administration does not give out contracts like that.

His words: “I don’t even know the person you are talking about, because he is not working in this administration.  If you know how things work here, you will know that due process is always followed before any contract is awarded.”
