TRAGEDY struck in the small town of Faru,
in Maradun Emirate Council of Zamfara State, when suspected cattle
rustlers killed a divisional police officer (DPO) and two children and
then set the police station ablaze.
The attack came three weeks after gunmen stormed Yargaladima village in Dansadau Emirate Council and killed over 200 people.
Eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the Fulani herdsmen
attacked the police station at Faru, apparently to free some of their
men who were in custody.
Findings revealed that the hoodlums, numbering about 50, stormed the
police station, but could not find their colleagues, as they were
already transferred to Gusau.
Irked by the development, the hoodlums set the police station
ablaze, while two other children living adjacent to the station were
not lucky, as the fire spread to their house and killed them.
Also, it was gathered that the DPO, who tried to escape, was shot from behind, and died on the spot.
As of the time of filing this report, normalcy had returned to the
village, as a detachment of mobile police sent to the troubled spot on
the orders of the commissioner of police had successfully restored
order.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),
Lawal Abdullahi, said it was not true that a DPO was killed, but he
confirmed the death of two children.
He also added that the burnt police edifice was an outpost and not a police station.
