As part of efforts to combat the insurgents, the Nigeria Police Force is now acquiring equipment that will detect explosives.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Investigation, Mr Peter Gana, disclosed this yesterday during an interactive meeting with security stakeholders at the Police Officers’ Mess, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos State.
He also disclosed that recruitment into the police would commence in a few weeks’ time. Gana, who is also the DIG in charge of the Western Zone of Nigeria, said the recruitment was to beef up man power in the force in view of the security challenges in the country.
He said that the shortage of man power in the force was a serious challenge.
The DIG noted that the current security challenges needed more hands and cooperation by all and sundry, adding that the force was acquiring modern equipment which could detect explosives and fire arms anywhere.
Gana said that he was in Lagos to sensitise the people to the need to be security conscious in their areas, urging members of the public to be the eye and ears of the police in their communities.
The DIG specifically called on transporters to work with the police by providing CCTV at motor parks, while assuring of regular checks on hotels to screen their guests.
He said the meeting would continue with senior officers and other states in the zone. In their response, the stakeholders, assured the DIG of their cooperation and urged the police authorities to improve on the welfare of the officers by providing protection kits.
The stakeholders also called for the protection of the identity of informants, provision of CCTV at motor parks, introduction of community police and security education in all categories of schools.
They further called for proper checks of illegal arms into the country. About 150 people, including AIG Zone 2, Mr Mamman Tsafe, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umaru Manko, and area commanders were at the meeting
