Man commits suicide over inability to pay debt

A middle-aged man identified as Mr Aniefiok Okon allegedly stabbed himself to death at the weekend for his inability to pay a N150,000 debt.
The incident, which occurred at night on Oron Road by Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, shocked the residents of the area. It was gathered that the yet-tobe- identified creditors were disturbing Okon to pay them. But unable to pay, Okon decided to take his life, to avoid further harassment.

It was also learnt that the man stabbed himself several times with a broken bottle.
Confirming the incident, a relative of the deceased, Pastor Edet Tom, said Okon was restless and was going about lamenting his inability to pay his debt, saying that his creditors were on his neck. Tom, however, said that committing suicide was not the best solution. He advised people not to commit suicide because it would not solve their problems.
Tom also urged people to always look up to God in times of trouble because He is the only solution. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Etim Dickson, confirmed the incident.
He said: “A case of suicide has been reported to us.” Dickson said no arrest had been made as no one had been linked to his death. The PPRO, however, added that investigation was still going on to see if Okon was prompted by anybody to take his life.
