Customs impounds N186.4m vehicles
Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of Customs, Zone A Ikeja, Lagos, has intercepted brand new vehicles of various brands and models valued N186,474,128 smuggled into the country.
The unit’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), DSC Ejesieme Uche, said in a statement yesterday that the move was part of the determination of the New Controller of the unit, DSC Turaki Adamu, to check smuggling.
“The unit has intercepted 22 brand new vehicles, comprising 19 Toyota Hilux pickups, two Izuzu-DMAX jeeps and one Toyota Land Cruiser GRX 2014 model, along Ikoyi/Victoria Island axis. The vehicles were valued at N186,474,128,” Uche said.
The PRO said that the seizure was a result of intelligence gathering, adding that FOU ‘A’ operatives trailed the vehicles coming from unapproved routes.

He said: “As professionals with the requisite training and competence, the unit could not afford to embark on aggressive confrontation with the smugglers, particularly in densely populated areas, hence the need to trail them to a safe place.
“Despite these precautionary measures, the smugglers engaged our operatives in a gun duel, but were over powered by the superior fire power of our operatives. But interestingly, there were no casualties.”
Uche attributed the seizure was attributed to the dexterity, resilience, commitment and dedication of all officers and men of the unit. Meanwhile, Adamu on Tuesday inspected the quarter guard mounted by officers and men of the unit in his honour.
Addressing officers and men of the unit, Adamu emphasised the need for the repositioning and strengthening of the operational functionality of the unit, particularly to ensure that it remains a flagship in anti-smuggling efforts.
He charged all officers and men to redouble their efforts while describing the task of policing the borders and complementing the efforts of other commands as herculean.
