The Lagos State Police Command has embarked on a man hunt for a politician who allegedly used to sponsor suspected robbers for operation.
The politician, identified simply as Akogun, hit the police wanted list after four members of an armed robbery gang, arrested at the Ojo local area of the Lagos State, mentioned his name.
The politician, described as ‘ a godfather’ was said to have escaped through the window when detectives from Ojo Police Station, led one of the suspects to his residence.
The four suspects have been identified as Victor Cletus, 27, who claimed to be the owner of the arms and ammunition recovered from them , Victor Oluramide, 23, who claimed to be a staff of Lagos State Educational Board, Semiu Fashola and Femi Akanyande.
Police said the suspects, who a locally made pistol and three unexpended cartridges were recovered from, were alleged to be part of a robbery syndicate that have been terrorising Iba and its environ in Ojo Local Government Council Area of the state, including Obadore in Alimosho Council Area.
A police source said: “The bandits were unleashing terror on their latest victims, last Tuesday when they were repelled by our men from Iba Police Post who were on surveillance under the Obadore Bridge that links Ojo and Alimosho area of the state.
“In the melee that ensued between the robbers and police, one of the suspects was apprehended and we recovered the locally made pistol and cartridges from him, while the rest took to their heels. The suspect was transferred to Ojo Division and later led detectives to the residences of other suspects at Iba area, thus leading to the arrest of other members of the gang.”
It was gathered that after their, Cletus claimed ownership of the weapon and also confessed that the gang was being sponsored by Akogun who resides at Iba area of the local government council.
Cletus led policemen to the residence of the alleged godfather who fled through the window on sighting the policemen. Cletus, said to be the leader of the gang, allegedly confessed that he seized the gun recovered from him, from smugglers under the Obadore Bridge where the gang most often used to carry out their operations.
Cletus, who has scars of gunshot injury all over his body said the gang has been operating with the gun since December 2013. He however failed to disclose how much wealth the gang had made since they started operations.
According to Cletus, oil pipeline vandals and smugglers were his gang’s targets. Cletus reportedly said: “Our gang has never killed anyone with the gun since we started robbing with it.”
