Police in Lagos are on a manhunt for a politician, identified simply as
Akogun, who used to sponsor robbery operations.
Akogun’s name appeared on the police wanted list after four members of an
armed robbery gang, arrested at the Ojo Local Government Area of the Lagos
State, mentioned his name.
The politician was said to have escaped through the window when detectives
from Ojo Police Station led one of the suspects to his residence.
The suspects are Victor Cletus, 27, who claimed to be the owner of the arms
and ammunition recovered from them, Victor Oluramide, 23, who claimed to be an
employee of Lagos State Education Board, Semiu Fashola and Femi Akanyande.
Police recovered a locally-made pistol and three unexpended cartridges from
the suspects said to be part of a robbery syndicate which had been terrorising
Iba and its environs in Ojo Local Government, including Obadore in Alimosho
Local Government Area.
“The bandits were unleashing terror on their latest victims last Tuesday when
they were repelled by our men from Iba Police Post who were on surveillance
under the Obadore Bridge that links Ojo and Alimosho area of the state.
“In the ensuing melee, one of the suspects was apprehended and we recovered
the locally-made pistol and cartridges from him, while the rest took to their
heels.
The suspect was transferred to Ojo Division and later led detectives to the
residences of other suspects at Iba area, thus leading to the arrest of other
members of the gang,” a police source said.
It was gathered that after their arrest, Cletus claimed ownership of the
weapon and also confessed that the gang was being sponsored by Akogun living in
Iba area.
