UNILAG confirms death of security official

Adejumo

The University of Lagos has confirmed the death of one of its top security officials, Sunday Adejumo.
PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that the late 50-year-old was shot by suspected assassins at a beer parlor.
Our correspondent had also reported that the deceased was in company with three of his colleagues when the men came in and killed him.
The university, when contacted, had said it was not aware that he died.
The Head of the Information Unit and Assistant Registrar of the University, Kingrobert Emukpoeruo, however, told our correspondent in his office on Tuesday that the deceased had been confirmed dead by the institution.
While describing the incident as unfortunate, the PRO said,
“I know him very well. We were like brothers.
“Prior to the day he died, we were supposed to be together at the sports complex with those colleagues who were with him.”
He, however, denied that the deceased was the Head of Operations, Security Unit, of the university.
He declined to give his designation when prodded further, telling our correspondent that it was important for the university to set the records straight.
PUNCH Metro on Sunday evening had called the Chief Security Officer of the University, who was said to be the immediate boss of the deceased.
He had refused to speak with our correspondent.
He had said, “I don’t know you and I cannot talk to you. Who gave you my number?”
When told it was an official of the varsity, he had said, “Tell him to call me.”
On Tuesday when further contacted, the CSO directed our correspondent to the Information Unit.
An official of the university, however, told our correspondent the university was grieving and might not want to talk.
Another top official, who pleaded anonymity, gave our correspondent more insight into what transpired on the night Adejumo was killed.
He said, “Adejumo was actually drinking with his friends that night when a man staggered in as if he was drunk, and disrupted their table.
“While they were trying to regain their balance and understand what was going on, some other guys emerged from their back and pushed Adejumo on the chest.
