Facts at the weekend emerged in Calabar, Cross River State on how a
23-year-old man, Stanley Etim, died in police custody.
Etim, an orphan,
was arrested by police officers attached to D5 of the State Criminal
Investigation Department (SCID), Diamond Hill, Calabar, was beaten to
death by the police.
New Telegraph had earlier reported the death of the young man while
in police custody.
An autopsy report released at the weekend indicates
that Etim died of extensive “blunt head and limb (lower/upper limb)
injuries”.
The report, which was signed by one Dr Irabor Godstime Isi, a
pathologist with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) and
witnessed by one Omoruyi Kenneth of the Department of Histopathology of
the same university, states as follows: “Extensive blunt head and limb
(lower/upper limb) injuries,” with a footnote: “This does not mean the
mode of dying e.g. heart failure, asthma, etc.
