Elections: Police arrest man with 813 PVC in Ghana-must-go bag


Detectives attached to Zone 6, have arrested a man in possession of 813 Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC) at Ebonyi State.

The suspect, Madueke Sunday, 31, hails from Izzi Community of Ebonyi State, was carrying a Ghana-must-go bag filled with PVC.
The team of detectives, known as, ‘Special Election Team’ was created by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, (AIG), in Charge of Zone 6, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin.
The team has consistently warned against improper conduct before, during and after the general elections.
Speaking of the arrest, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Obere Friday, Head of the Special Election Team, said that the arrest that took place on Monday, April 6, 2015 at Izzi Community in Ebonyi State.
According to him, the AIG received a call on Easter Sunday, April 5 on one of the zone’s dedicated phone lines about suspicion of two men in possession of multiple PVCs. The team was immediately put to action by the AIG as they moved into Izzi Community were the suspects were said to have been sighted in the wee hours of the morning.
Friday said: “Upon sighting the Police, the suspects made a run for it with the men of the Special Election Team in hot pursuit. The suspects made ran through some convoluted paths of the town but were apprehended when they attempted to jump over a fence.”
The AIG has ordered for a thorough investigation to be carried out and more arrests are expected to follow.

Speaking on the arrest in a telephone chat, AIG Ogunsakin gave commendation to the Special Electoral Team for their dogged determination and commitment. He also berated those who had insisted on crime despite warnings against it.
Ogunsakin took the opportunity to restate the commitment of the Police to combat every plan against a hitch free election in the four states of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi and Rivers that make up the Zone 6 command.
The AIG also encouraged all members of the electorate to exercise their franchise without fear of oppression or intimidation from any quarter. The AIG also solicited for information sharing by members of the public. He handed out the dedicated communication channels of the Zone ‘6’ headquarters, Calabar.
