His
words: “I was frustrated! When you are frustrated, you can do anything. I took
a risk but I was not lucky. Life is about taking risk. It’s either you win or
you lose. I’ve worked and suffered as a casual labourer in Doha for two years
and I was desperate to change my status.”

mother of three, Nwaokolo Gladys Omari, 32, who was arrested for attempting to
smuggle drugs to Spain, said was sorry she might not see her kids for a long
time because of her arrest.
She
said that all she wanted was to make quick money and dash back home to her kids,
but luck was against her.
The
lady, who said she used to buy and sell clothes, added: “I’ve lived in Spain
for about a decade. I came back to Nigeria because of financial hardship. I
love to go back to Spain and I do not have enough money. This was how I found
myself in drug trafficking. The most painful aspect of my arrest is that I told
a friend to look after my children for a few days. By my calculation, I thought
I could quickly smuggle the drugs to Spain and return within one week. I felt
so bad when the drug was detected at the airport.”
Aside
from Kelvin and Omari, four other suspects were arrested by the National Drug
Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport
(MMIA) Lagos with 16.51kg of narcotics.

to NDLEA spokesman, Mitchel Ofoyeju, the drugs include 10.27kg of cannabis,
1.31kg of methamphetamine and 4.93kg of cocaine.

were taking methamphetamine to Tanzania and South Africa. Another was taking
cannabis to Doha, Qatar, while Omari, the only female among them was going to
Madrid, Spain with cocaine.”

suspects was found with liquid cocaine in body cream while another excreted

cocaine concealed in body cream from Brazil. Ogochukwu was also arrested. He
excreted 36 wraps of cocaine weighing 570 grammes on board the aircraft. Okey
was caught with 975 grammes of methamphetamine while going to Tanzania. Attempt
by Obiora Anthony to smuggle 335 grammes of methamphetamine to South Africa
failed. Kelvin was found smuggling 10.27kg of cannabis to Doha while Omari was
caught exporting 1.670kg of cocaine to Madrid.”

trafficking. This is my first time and I was arrested due to my inexperience. I
regret my action.”
Ogochukwu,
31, said that his problem started when he excreted cocaine while on the flight.
“I lost my father at the age of five and I had
since then been responsible for my upkeep. Last year, I struggled to travel to
Brazil hoping that I would get a good job. In fact, life has been difficult. I
later met a Brazilian who decided to assist me. He gave me cocaine and paid for
my ticket to Nigeria. He promised to pay me a million naira to start any
business of my choice. I was happy to return home and start up a business with
the money he would pay me but my problem began when I excreted the drugs while
on the flight. At the arrival hall, NDLEA detected the drugs in my luggage.”
Obiora
Anthony, 32, said that a friend gave him a bag of foodstuff to send to South
Africa, adding that he was arrested following the discovery of drugs in the
bag.
His
words: “A friend gave me a bag to send to South Africa. When I got to the
Airport, 11 sachets of methamphetamine were found inside the foodstuff. That
was how I got involved. Now I’m suffering alone while my friend is on the run.”
Anthony,
28, said that he resorted to drug trafficking after he lost his shop to an
inferno. “I used to sell clothes but I lost my goods in a fire incident. This
was what led me into drug trafficking. I was given liquid cocaine inside body
cream and they promised to pay me half a million naira to mitigate my suffering.”
