Corporal disappears after shooting four, as investigative team is set up

The Lagos State Police Command, yesterday, revealed that it had gotten in touch with Akure Police command, over the case of the corporal who shot four people, one of them a pregnant woman. One of the victims died, while others are still battling to stay alive at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba. This was even as the Police hierarchy in Lagos condemned the attitude of policemen who get drunk while on duty.
The fleeing police corporal mohammed Abubakar, attached to MOPOL 17, Akure State, is said to have been drunk and with his rifle, when he went to a fast food joint to eat and opened fire during a minor dispute with another customer, shooting four people.
While doctors said the woman would definitely scale through, the other victims, all male, are said to be in a critical condition. One of the men was shot in the eye.
Reacting to the shooting, Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, said: “We’ve gotten in touch with MOPOL 17 Squadron commander and he said the corporal will be arrested as soon as possible once sighted. The corporal will have to face an orderly room trial and if found guilty, will be charged with murder.
“The Lagos State Police Command had already set up an investigative team to find out what actually transpired that day.
“It is against police ethics and code of conduct for a policeman to be drunk and on duty. It’s also against our operational procedure. Any policeman found to be drunk, while on duty, will be punished. We also want members of the public to report such policemen to us.”
