Justice Abubakar Sadiq Umar of the FCT High Court, Maitama, Abuja on Thursday,
February 6, 2014 convicted and sentenced one Agboworin Omole to fifteen months
imprisonment with no option of fine over an offence which borders on fraud.
The convict was arraigned by the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on one count amended charge for
fraudulently collecting and misappropriating the sum of N8.4m (Eight Million,
Four Hundred Thousand Naira) belonging to the Federal Ministry of Education,
Abuja.
The charge reads: “That you Chief B.A
Omole being the Managing Director of Omole Agboworin & Co. and Omole
Agboworin & Co . on or about 1st August, 2001 at Abuja in
the Abuja Judicial Division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory
did dishonestly misappropriate the sum of N8, 400,000.00 (Eight Million, Four
Hundred Thousand Naira) only being the property of Federal Ministry of
Education, Abuja and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 309
of the Penal Code Law Cap 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990”.
Omole’s journey to jail started sometime
in 2001 when he entered into a contractual agreement as an Estate Agent with
the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja for the lease of a property at Plot
606 Lingui Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja for a sum of N8, 400,000.00 (Eight Million,
Four Hundred Thousand Naira) for two years (agency fee inclusive), but failed to
deliver the property to the ministry.
All attempts by the ministry to get a
refund of the said sum proved abortive.
