The Lagos
State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko has accused the judiciary of being
responsible for continuous return of criminals to the streets of Lagos. This was
even as he said that the return of criminals to the streets usually endangers
police officers, lamenting the death of 39 policemen between January and December,
2013.
Manko stated
this today (Tuesday) at the police command, Ikeja, while addressing journalists
and reviewing his achievements from January to December, 2013.
In his
presentation, he noted that the command lost 39 police officers during
encounter with armed robbers.
He added: “Our
criminal justice system should be reformed in such a manner that would
guarantee faster and impartial dispensation of justice to all concerned, regardless
of their societal status. A situation where these hoodlums are taken to court
and a few weeks later are seen hovering around in the society is a big concern.
“The maxim, ‘justice
delay is justice denied’ and ‘justice must not only be done, but seen to be
done’ should be the watch word. Appropriate and proportionate punishment should
be awarded at all times to guarantee the sanctity of the society and the rule
of law.”
The command
also had 531 reported cases of stolen and snatched vehicles and 919 cases of
recovered ones.
In his statistical
analysis of armed robbery in the state, Manko argued that cases of robbery had
reduced. According to him, in 2012, the command had 160 robbery cases and in
2013, it slides to 154.
