Gunmen kill pastor’s wife, abduct two-year-old daughter
Three gunmen yesterday killed the wife of the Senior Pastor of Christian Hope Ministry, Odukpani, Cross River State, Pastor Godwin Bassey, and abducted his two-year-old daughter. Bassey’s niece, who gave her name simply as Esther, said the woman, Glory, was murdered in the early hours of yesterday. According to her, the incident happened shortly after the pastor went to the church to arrange seats and sweep the premises for the day’s service.
She said: “As we were about going out with my uncle, we saw a car parked by our house. About three people came out to ask for water to put in their radiator, while others were waiting in the car. My uncle gave them water and they went back to their car, after that we left to sweep the church and arrange seats.
“We were in the church when somebody called my uncle that his wife has been killed. When we got home, we saw Aunty Glory in the pool of her blood, lifeless.
They also took Blessing away.” Bassey is an indigene of Ebighi Eta, Okobo local government area of Akwa Ibom State, but resides in Cross River. It was gathered that shortly after Bassey drove out to his church, the assailants, who seemed to have been monitoring his movements, returned with the water container and attempted to abduct Blessing.
The pastor’s wife struggled with them and shouted for help but no help came. In the process, they gave Glory the beating of her life. But when the beating did not weaken her resolve, they shot her three times. After that, they left with Blessing. The woman’s body has been deposited at the General Hospital, Calabar. Bassey could not be reached for comments as he was not at home when our correspondent visited. His telephone lines were also switched off. However, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Hogan Bassey, confirmed the incident, adding that the case was being investigated.
