12-year-old drowns attempting to save brother’s sandals

A 12-year-old boy drowns on Friday at Alfa Nla area of Agege, Lagos State, while attempting to save his kid brother’s sandals from drainage.

According to eye witnesses, the deceased, Abdulrazak, fondly called Razak, drowned at about 3pm.
The incident occurred during the heavy rainfall on Friday. Every part of the community was said to have been flooded.
The incident happened while he was returning from mosque, after the Jumat prayer on Friday.

A resident, identified as Laide said: “The incident happened while the boys were returning from Jumat prayer. It was raining heavily. Razak's brother suddenly called him, telling him that one of his sandals had been carried away by the flood. The sandal was carried by the current into the drainage.  Razak tried to get the sandal, but fell straight into the drainage. He immediately carried away by the current in the flooded drainage.”
The deceased’s brother screamed his name to no avail, and then ran home to give his parents the tragic news.
Friends, neighbours and family members of the deceased moved out into the rain to search for the boy. The people further split into groups and went to different areas where canals are situated.
It was further gathered that a little boy had earlier sighted the body of Razak being carried away by the flood and alerted adults, but nobody paid attention to him.
It was when Razak’s father came to the place, screaming that his son was gone, that people remembered the earlier words of the little boy.

Another resident, Miliki, who works at Cement Bus Stop, said: “While it was still raining, a little boy said he saw a body, but nobody paid attention to him. They started making different suggestions on what it could be, but the boy kept insisting it was a human body. Razak’s father came into the street 30 minutes later, with tears in his eyes, to announce the incident. Everybody was shocked and began to search for Razak."

Miliki said that people went into the canals in search of the boy, but they couldn't find him. Other members of the community stayed with the worried father to console him.
The father of the boy was said to have attempted to jump into canal, but people grabbed and held him.
