The
former Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Florence Ita
Giwa has urged Niger Delta activists to sheathe their swords and embraced dialogue
with the government in order to cushion the impacts of environmental
degradation and hazards on women and children.
In a statement made available to New
Telegraph, Ita Giwa noted that she aware of the sufferings people in the
regions had been experiencing over the years, stressing that there was no
better way to achieve peace than dialogue.
She further noted that vandalism of
pipelines in the region was increasing the threat of climate change. She said
that women and children were particularly the most vulnerable to the impact of
climate change.
While noting that Niger Delta region
is fundamentally disadvantaged to the impact of global warming on many fronts
due to its geography, climate, oil exploration and gas flaring among others,
Ita Giwa added that the adaptive capacity of the rural majority to climate
change was very low and as such, it was for the good of the region to come
together and resolve the crisis of the Niger Delta.
The statement reads in parts: “As a
mother and leader from the Niger Delta, I’m appealing to my people to embrace
dialogue as a way of ending the restiveness in the region. The increasing
number of mortality rate is alarming as we are losing pregnant women, children
on daily basis due to environmental pollution compounded by environmental
degradation from burst pipelines. I’m also calling on government to ensure the
protection of the lives of the people who are already suffering from untold
hardships.”
