The Inspector-General of Police, Mr.
Ibrahim Abubakar, has been urged to reopen the case file on an incident that
happened 15 years ago, where four men were allegedly murdered by policemen in
Lagos State.
The man making the call today is Mr.
Akaraka Chinweke. The four men were from his village. He said he had been
seeking justice for the murder of the men since 2001 and wouldn’t stop until
justice has been done.
According to Chinweke, on July 1,
2001, four men; Izuchukwu Ezeama16, Aloysius Osigwe 30, Chukwuemika Ezeofor 22 and
Anthony Ezenwafor 29, were murdered at Surulere, Lagos State in cold blood by some
happy trigger policemen. The policemen were alleged to have been chasing after
some armed robbers.
The corpses of the men were taken
away by the police and till date, no member of their families has set eyes on
the bodies. While calling for the policemen
who shot and killed the men to be arrested and prosecuted, Chinweke said that deceased’s
families needed the bodies for proper burial and closure.
Revealing that he had written
petitions to Idris and President Muhammadu Burhari on the reopening of the case
file, Chinweke alleged that the police were shielding their personnel that
killed the four men.
He said: “But I believe that
nothing hidden under the sun that the Almighty God will not reveal. The truth
will surely prevail. I have been seeking justice for the slain men for 15 years
now. What we want is retributive justice. There should be punishment for those
police that murdered our brothers and seized their bodies. The police should
also return our brothers’ corpses to their parents for proper burial.”
