Cultists’ rage leaves one dead in Ekiti

A young man, suspected to be a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU) Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was yesterday, killed by a rival cult group during a supposed supremacy clash.
The incident, which took place at Iworoko-Ekiti, a suburb of Ado-Ekiti, caused panic among residents of the area. Trying to douse the tension, the police promptly deployed teams of policemen across sections of the area.
According to sources, the victim was allegedly shot several times before he was hacked on the head.
His body, covered in blood, was left by the roadside for hours after the incident. Some students, who craved confidentiality, revealed that the incident occurred around 7:30pm.
One of them said: "At about 7:30, we heard gunshots and pandemonium followed. We learnt the victim was ambushed. His assailants caught up with him and shot him, after which they inflicted machete cuts on his head."
Another student said: "We are now living in fear because there may be a reprisal."
The Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the killing, stressing that it was a cult war.
Adeyemi added: “Men of the command got wind of the clash, but by the time our men got there, they had machete the young man to death."
He said efforts had begun to unravel masterminds of the killing, noting that culprits would, “be exposed and brought to book."
