A 29-year-old armed robbery suspect,
Kola Ogunbiyi, said that he was introduced into armed robbery while
he in prison, awaiting trial.
Ogunbiyi, who was paraded alongside
other 12 robbery suspects, said he was given N25, 000.00 as his own share from
the sales of a car, which he and the gang members snatched at gunpoint in Ondo
State.
He explained that among the
vehicles, which he and his gang members snatched at gunpoint, was one that
belonged to a police officer. The police officer’s vehicle was recovered
alongside his service rifle.
Ogunbiyi said: “Our gang leader is
Otunba. Police have not arrested him. Otunba was introduced me to by an inmate
known as Alhaji, while I was in the prison. I didn’t know that the vehicle we
snatched at gunpoint in Aule area of Akure belonged to a police officer. We
only got to know after we saw a rifle in the car. It was when we wanted to
return the rifle with the stolen vehicle that we were arrested.”
Ogunbiyi said: “Two days after
I met with Otunba, I was introduced to the group. We travelled to Akure and
snatched three cars, which we delivered to the buyers. The buyers were yet to
pay for the three cars, when we went again and snatched a Toyota Camry around
Aule in Akure, belonging to a police officer. We saw a rifle in the car and we
decided to return the rifle, unaware that the car had been tracked."
