Three operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, were ambushed and killed by gunmen on Friday at Kogi State.
According
to NDLEA spokesman, Joan Achema, it was actually six officers that were
attacked, but three died at the spot, while the killers made away with the
rifles of the slain men.
Achema
has identified the slain officers as Nicholas Onwumere, an Assistant
Superintendent of Narcotics, Abdulrahaman Musa and Ebun Peters, who were both
Narcotic Agents.
Achema said: “The Officers and men, until their demise were
serving at Okene Area Command, Kogi State Command of the Agency. The officers, who
were on motorized patrol had stopped at a point opposite the Federal College of
Education, Okene last Friday around 2pm, when some men jumped out from behind
and opened fire on them.
“Three out of the six officers died on the spot, while the
others escaped. The officers had barely arrived at the spot when they heard
gunshots targeted at those armed with rifles. The assailants made away with two
rifles after gunning down the three officers.”
The image maker disclosed that NDLEA Kogi State Command was
working closely with the state police command, Department of State Services,
DSS and other security agencies in the state to ensure a quick arrest of the
fleeing killers.
“The incident has brought to the fore once again the
hazards of the asymmetric drug war. The heart of the Agency goes to the
families of the fallen officers and men who have paid the highest sacrifice for
their fatherland by dying in active service. They may have died but their dream
of a drug-free Nigeria will never die,” said Achema.
