Why I didn’t pay for food, phone theft suspect


 Detectives attached to Isolo Police Station, Lagos State, have arrested and charged Temitope Adeyemi 31, to court because he couldn’t pay for his meal.

Adeyemi explained that he actually wanted to pay for the N1000 noodles he bought, but needed to sell his phone first. He explained that it was only after he sold the phone that he would be able to pay for the noodles.

According to police, Adeyemi had allegedly stolen the phone before the incident occurred. The said that Adeyemi admitted he planned to sell the phone and use the proceeds to buy food.

Adeyemi ordered for noodles worth of N1000 at the food vendor’s stand, located at College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, Lagos, route. After eating, he allegedly attempted to run without paying.

The owner of the restaurant, Olumbo Labake, was said to have raised the alarm. The suspect was arrested.

During interrogation, Adeyemi admitted he didn’t have any money on him. He said that he wanted to trade his phone for the food.

A police source at the Isolo division, where the matter was reported, said that the suspect did not inform the food vendor that he had no money on him before ordering for the food.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, directed that the suspect be charged to court. The matter was on Monday, brought before an Isolo Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Adeyemi was charged with stealing prepared noodles and being in possession of a phone suspected to be a stolen one.

The prosecutor, Oje Uagbale, asked the court to strike out the first count of eating noodles without paying, while the second count of being in possession of suspected stolen phone was sustained. The suspect pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, O.A. Ogbe, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Adeyemi was remanded in prison custody pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till October 9, 2017.
