Child marriage: CAN president plans to mobilise Nigerians against Senate

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has threatened to mobilise Nigerians against the Senate if it fails to recind its position on child marriage.
CAN president, who issued the threat in an interview with newsmen in Jos shortly after an interdenominational service organised by North Central CAN, also charged politicians in the country to stop overheating the polity ahead of 2015 and concentrate on good governance.
He pointed out that marriage should not be for immature people, stating that such people will find it difficult to handle the challenges of marriage.
He said “Girls below the age 18 should not be forced into marriage rather they should be allowed to go to school and be matured so that they can make decisions for themselves and be able to handle the challenges of marriage.
“We are totally against what has happened in the Senate and we are asking them to revise it, we disagree with them, it is a wrong move and Nigeria and Nigerians will not accept it”
The CAN president, who said some Nigerians don’t have the fear of God, noted that it is the lack of fear of God that would make a grown up man to marry a 13-year-old girl and make people to steal and engage in corrupt practices .
