Edo teachers protest kidnap of colleagues

Teachers in Ovia North- East Local Government Area of Edo State, on Tuesday, took to the streets of Benin City to protest the abduction of three of their colleagues.
Three teachers, Patience Osadolor, Momodu Aisha and Patience Oroghene, were reportedly abducted at gunpoint in Orhogbua Primary School, Ekenwan village, during school hours last week Tuesday.
The teachers stormed the Benin secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to register their disdain to what they described as the plight of teachers in the state.
During the protest, led by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) chairman in the council, Nero Edema, the placard-carrying teachers said it was unimaginable that primary school teachers have become targets for kidnappers in the state, blaming Governor Oshiomhole for giving the impression that they (teachers) were well fed, even though they had not been paid salaries of June and July.
Meanwhile the Edo State government has given the assurance that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the three abducted teachers.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole made this known at a meeting held with the leadership of the Nigeria LabourCongress (NLC) led by Comrade Emmanuel Ademokun and NUT led by Patrick Ikosimi.
The governor also gave the assurance that primary school teachers would be paid their salaries during the period they embarked on strike because the teachers have since returned to the classrooms, adding that there was no plan to sack teachers in the state.
