Man suffocates inside grave attempting to cut corpse’s head
People of Ilobu, headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun woke up on Wednesday morning to a bizarre scene when they discovered the body of a 20-yearold man in a grave.
The man, identified as Abdullahi, had allegedly dug a hole beside a grave through which he attempted to cut off the head of the corpse. Nobody could really explain what happened, but Abdullahi was believed to have suffocated with half of his body in the hole in the grave.

The incident, which happened around Imam Aroun Compound in the ancient town, was said to have elicited anger among the people who besieged the scene, especially from the nearby Olobu market, as they expressed shock and surprise at the dastardly act. Abdullahi, described as a member of a notorious youth gang in the community, was said to have been spotted along Palace Road on Tuesday night, while fighting a lady for unknown reason.
The deceased, who hailed from Tooto Compound in the same town, was said to have dug a hole around the grave in the middle of the night on Tuesday to gain access to the corpse since the concrete used over the grave barred him from digging it directly. However, investigation showed that while trying to grope through the hole into the grave, the upper parts of his body went deep inside the grave and it became difficult for him to come out.
In the process, he suffocated. Passers-by, who discovered his body with only his legs remaining outside the hole, shouted to the attention of the people, who gathered en masse and struggled to remove his remains. Policemen took the body away since none of his relatives showed up to claim it. The police also reportedly visited his family house but his relatives, who got wind of the incident, had deserted the house.
When contacted on phone, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the police station, identified as Ms Talatu, refused to comment on the incident. She said only the state police commissioner or the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Folasade Odoro, could speak on it.
But the PPRO told our correspondent that she was in a programme. Odoro promised to call after the programme but she did not at press time.
