A suspect, Mr. Bestman Momodu, told journalists yesterday that he killed his father, Zuberu Momodu, after stealing the old man’s stick of cigarette. Bestman, an indigene of Ubiane village in Aviele town, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state, was among 67 suspected criminals paraded yesterday by the police in Benin, the Edo State capital.
The 22-year-old suspect was arrested for killing his father with a machete over argument He said: “It was because of a quarrel I had with my father that led to it. I stole a cigarette from him. As we were quarrelling, I mistakenly took a cutlass and cut him.
We are five in the family and I am a labourer. It was a mistake. I did not run because it was a mistake, it was the community that arrested me. I was told my father died but I did not attend his burial.” The suspects paraded included armed robbers, rapists, kidnappers, illegal arms dealers, secret cult members and murder suspects.
Also paraded was one Endurance Igbinoviawho, who falsely obtained about N400,000 after he had posed as a former commissioner of police in the state. The suspect promised unsuspecting victims that he would employ some unnamed “boys” into the Nigerian Customs Service. Items recovered from the suspects include 17 guns of different sizes and types, 48 live cartridges, three vehicles, a motorcycle, battle axe and cutlasses.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Foluso Adebanjo, who paraded the suspects, warned bandits and others who indulge in criminal activities to leave Edo State during the ember months or face the full wrath of the law. Adebanjo urged the residents to be security conscious, remain vigilant and monitor the movement and activities of people as well as their neighbours within and round their premises and to report suspicious characters to the police for prompt action.
The commissioner also called for active cooperation between men of the command and members of the public by providing useful information to the security agencies “who are ever determined to ruthlessly flush out and deal with criminals in the state”.
He said: “My officers and men are poised and will not relent in the effort to ensure peace and security in Edo State.” The measures put in place to combat crime in the ember months, according to him, are in line with the directive by the Acting Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, to all officers to be more proactive in their duties and responsibilities at the various commands across the country. “He has ordered that surveillance and raids on vulnerable targets must be intensified. We are more than determined to decisively carry out the orders,” Adebanjo said.
