A 22-year-old Fulani man, identified as Shehu Sani, yesterday
reportedly stabbed a girl, Bateren Okiotodoro, to death at Sabon-Kasua
market in Asaba, Delta State.
The suspect, it was gathered, accosted the victim and her friend, one
Nkem Egwuonwu, at the market and threatened to kill them with a dagger,
if they refused to surrender their bags.
Angered that Bateren refused to yield to the threat, the suspect stabbed her in the back.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),
DSP Celestina Kalu,
confirmed the incident, saying that the suspect fled the scene after
stabbing the lady. She said, “Consequently, the said Shehu Sani stabbed
Bateren Okiotodoro snatched the victim’s bag and fled.”
She said Egwuonwu, who was with the victim at the time of the
incident, however, recognised the suspect and raised the alarm which
attracted Corporal Thompson Eniya and other policemen attached to
Department of Operations, Asaba, who were on duty at NNPC Filling
Station on Asaba-Benin Expressway to the scene.
The corporal quickly alerted ‘B’ Division Police Station, Asaba and
detectives were dispatched to the scene. Kalu said that the victim gave
up the ghost while she was being rushed to the hospital for treatment.
She said: “In an effort to effect the immediate arrest of the fleeing
suspect, detectives, in the same night, raided the area during which
the suspect, Shehu Sani, was fished out and arrested through the
cooperation of the Fulani community in the area.”
According to her, the suspect has confessed to the crime and
mentioned one Shagari Usman, who has also been arrested, as his
accomplice.
