IG urges medical doctors to treat gunshot victims
The Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has urged all medical doctors in Nigeria to ensure they treat gunshot victims.
Speaking through the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, Idris said that however, such ‘patients’ should also be reported to the nearest police station immediately.
Owoseni stated this while addressing senior policemen during a lecture tagged, ‘Code of Conduct for law enforcement officials.’
Owoseni said: “The IGP has instructed medical doctors to go ahead in treating victims of gunshot wounds. Doctors should record such admissions and pass the information to the police. Provide medical aid to all injured persons.
Notify relatives or friends of those affected. Cooperate with investigation when requested and provide full and detailed report of the incident.”
The police duty is not to treat gunshot victims.”
Owoseni went further to speak emphatically on rules of engagement for policemen.
According to him, handcuffs should not be used on sick and elderly persons. It also shouldn’t be used on pregnant women or disabled person.
He stressed that Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers, should always go out to check on how their policemen handle and carry out their duties.
He said: “Go out and check the dressing of your men along the roads. As a Divisional Police Officers (DPO), you should not sit on your office and sleep all night. You should also work.”
