An official of the Lagos State Kick
Against Indiscipline (KAI) Brigade, Moshood Ayeni, was lynched by hawkers at
Iyana-Oworo area of Lagos State.
The victim, Moshood Ayeni, was
lynched on Tuesday after KAI Brigade officials arrested two traders hawking in
traffic. Other traders, who witnessed the arrest of their colleagues, mobilized
and attacked the vehicle of the KAI Brigade.
The Agency Spokesperson, Alabi
Rahmat, in a statement yesterday, said: “The officials were returning from an assignment
when they saw the traders hawking in traffic by car wash. They arrested
Jeremiah Nnana and Orich Nwofokoh. They were both selling sausage and phone
accessories in the traffic. The suspects were taken the vehicle with
registration number KRD 643 DS. Suddenly, the suspects’ colleagues, who had earlier
escaped, came back and pelted the officials with stone.”
Rahmat continued: “The traders
started shouting and calling the KAI Brigade officials thieves. They hurled
stones; the stones hit Ayeni on his head, while he was inside the vehicle. He
fell down from the moving vehicle and lost unconscious.”
Ayeni was rushed to the Lagos State
Emergency Centre, where he was revived and later referred to the Lagos
University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). He was pronounced dead on arrival at the
hospital.
The KAI Brigade Marshal
General, a retired Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Jimoh Amusat, condemned
the action of the hawkers, describing it as “barbaric.”
Amusat said: “The victim was
only carrying out his lawful duty when the hawkers attacked him and his
colleagues. The Brigade will not be deterred in combating the menace of illegal
highways traders and hawkers within the metropolis. We commiserate with the
victim’s family.”
