A 100Level student of the University
of Lagos, Akoka, Miss Ayomide Ariyibi, has allegedly committed suicide after
being accused of stealing lipstick, powder and clothes of her roommates.
Ariyibi’s accusers were said to have searched her bags and found the items in
three different bags.
The deceased was a student of
faculty of Faculty of Business Administration, department of Employee Relations
and Human Resource Management.
Ariyibi was alleged to have
committed suicide on Friday after being disgraced by her roommates for
allegedly stealing the lipstick. The lady was said to have carried out the act
in her room at Amina Hostel.
A Mechanical Engineering student of
UNILAG, Ajani Damilola, who shared the story on his Facebook Wall, disclosed
that after being humiliated Ariyibi called her mother on phone. The mother
dashed to the campus to pick her.
Damilola said: “As a result of the
public disgrace, Ayomide called her mother, who came to the school on Friday to
settle the issue between her daughter and the roommates. Ayomide’s mother later
paid the money of the makeup, which was valued at N2000. Thereafter, took her
daughter home. While she was going, some of her roommates were said to have
shouted at her, calling her a thief.”
The deceased’s mother, who is said
to be a worker in the school, left her all alone at home and returned to her
duty post.
When the woman returned in the
evening, she found Ayomide unconscious. The woman shook her awake and asked her
what was wrong; Ayomide simply pointed to a bottle of sniper.
The woman tried to force palm oil
down Ayomide’s throat. She was later rushed to a medical centre at Ebute-Meta,
where she was referred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba,
Mushin. She was confirmed dead around 7pm.
Attempts to find out from the police
the extent of the investigation into the incident, proved abortive as the Lagos
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olarinde Famous Cole didn’t pick
his calls.
The incident has however gone viral
on the social media, with many expressing anger and shock.
Many people believed that Ariyibi’s
roommates lied against her. According to some of them, if Ariyibi was a genuine
thief, she would have taken her life.
Kennytee Obaomo said: “This is terrible.
It’s really frustrating when you’re accused of something you know nothing about
and you feel defenceless. I hate bullies, but you shouldn't have put your mum
in sorrow. I’m very sure those who accused and disgraced you publicly will be
judged by their conscience.”
Adejare Hojay Adewale said: “It’s
very obvious that this girl didn't know anything about it; it’s a planned work
by her roommate. How could she steal her roommate’s make-up and separated them
into three bags? Those bitches are supposed to be prosecuted.”
Salau Wahab said: “It’s a big lesson
to all youth; you may come across many obstacles along your way in life. All is
for your good if you can handle it with care. Remember the story of Joseph in
the Bible. Please don’t take your life.”
Felicity Chijustin Ojimba: “You
shouldn’t have killed yourself. You should have been strong for your God to
vindicate you because He is GOD of justice. Your mother did the right thing by
taking you away from those evil roommates. How I wish you didn't break her
heart like this. It's a pity.”
Chukwuleta Essay: “Bad news. They
didn’t even confirm if she really stole the items. It might have been a setup
from haters. Even if she did it, they didn’t find out why it happened.”
Tessy Ezenwaka noted: “She’s not the worse person on
earth. The fact that she was caught doesn't mean she's the only thief around.
That's even if she stole what they claimed she did. Some of the people who
embarrassed her could be worse thieves and should also be arrested for indirect
murder or assault. Life is hard, people are heartless and inconsiderate.”
Adedapo Adelagun adds: “Why can't we learn not to
take laws into our hands? Her roommates definitely sent her to her grave. She
couldn't stand the mockery. All her roommates should be detained and face the
law and show reprimanded. This will serve as a deterrent. The situation is
this; it was a setup. Yet she allowed the devil to cheat her. We pray for her
mum that God will strengthen her at this time. We love you baby girl,
irrespective of what has happened. School authorities should rise up out if
their slumber and take prompt actions. The school is not a market place.
Student needs to be given proper orientation on how to handle crisis. This is
what is called crisis management. Let a counseling unit and other people whose
area covers this rise up.”
