CP orders arrest of DPO for shooting man to death

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, has ordered the immediate arrest and detention of the Divisional Police Officer, in charge of Ijeshatedo Police Station, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Mr. Muhammed Yakubu, for allegedly shooting to death a  fashion designer.

The DPO was alleged to have killed a 23-year-old Fashion Designer, Jamiu Ayoade.
Owoseni, who disclosed the arrest and detention of Yakubu to journalists yesterday, said no stone would be on unturned into the investigation of what led to the shooting and killing of Ayoade by the DPO.
Owoseni said: “As a follow up to the killing at Ijeshatedo, the police have sent some undercover policemen to the community to find out the truth from the residents and some eyewitnesses. We cannot rely on what the DPO told us. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris, has enjoined every police officer to follow the creed of the Nigerian Police Force and also allow the rule of law to prevail in everything they do. The IGP will not support or encourage impunity. Those who perpetrate impunity in uniform will not be treated with kids’ gloves. The DPO is presently under investigation as the law will take its cause on him. He has been arrested and taken into custody. I have visited the victim’s family and got their own side of the story. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (ACP), in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), the Area M Commander and decoy teams have started investigation into the matter.
“I have assured the victim’s family that they would get justice and that police will do everything to get to the root of the matter. The law will take his course.”
The DPO on Sunday, around 7: 30pm led some policemen to Wosilat Daudu Street, Ijeshatedo, where Ayoade was attending his friend’s birthday party.
The policemen were said to have gone to the area where the party was being held and left. They returned later and started shooting sporadically into the air, attempting to disperse the guests.
The DPO allegedly went into the passage of a building where the deceased was sitting with his girlfriend and shot him in the head, at close range. One Akeem Lawal also sustained gunshot injury in the hand. The policemen fled the scene after the shooting and murder of Ayoade.
