Pastor hands self to police after crushing girl



Pastor Pedro Olajide, who crushed an unknown girl to death along Dopemu, Oshodi –Abeokuta expressway and took her to hospital, where she died, has been given bail by an Ikeja Magistrates Court presided over by, Mrs. Y.O Aje-Afunwa, CM.

Olajide, a pastor in one of the local churches in Mangoro area of Lagos, crushed the about 18-year old girl to death last Sunday while on his way to church.
The pastor was led to the court by over 20 members of his church.
The incident happened at Dopemu under bridge section of Oshodi –Abeokuta expressway, at about 8am last Sunday.
A witness said, the young girl who was yet to be identified, rather than take pedestrian bridge, attempted to cross the highway.
The girl was said to have dashed across the road, got to the middle and decided to run back. Olajide’s car knocked her down.
Olajide was said to have stopped and carried the unconscious girl to the Ikeja General Hospital, where she gave up the ghost.
When Olajide realized the girl was dead, he reported himself to Shasha Police Division.
A-three man defence counsel led by Adeyinka Akiola told the court to grant the defendant bail in liberal terms.
 Akiola said: “The defendant is a man of conscience; he took the deceased to the hospital before she died.”
The police said it has been waiting to see if any relatives of the deceased surface after notices were published. But nobody has come since Sunday to identify her body. The remains of the girl have been deposited at the Yaba Mainland Hospital Mortuary.
Prosecutor, Peter Nwangu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police said the plea for bail would not be objected to, but the case file should be sent for DPP’s advice.
Magistrates, Aje-Afunwa granted the defendant bail in the sum of N400, 000, with two sureties in like sum. Each must present evidence of identification and residential addresses.
Aje-Afunwa said: “The IPO should duplicate the case file and forward to DPP for advice before the next sitting.”
The case was adjourned till July, 10, 2017.
