Policemen arrested for tying suspect to generator

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, yesterday disclosed that three policemen, who used handcuff to tie a suspect to a generator at Bariga Police Station, have been arrested and presently facing orderly room trial.

According to Owoseni, the incident, which occurred on July 16, 2017, was being properly and professionally handled.
Owoseni further revealed that the officers are currently facing orderly room trial at the command headquarters in Ikeja, stressing that they would be prosecuted accordingly.
Owoseni added: “Rather than for the policemen to deal with the suspect in accordance with the rules and regulation of the law, they instead, handcuffed the suspect to a generator at the station. Fortunately for the suspect, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bariga Police Station, discovered the barbaric act and ordered the arrest of the three policemen. The three officers have been arrested and normal disciplinary process has begun.”
Meanwhile, Owoseni, who frowned at unprofessional misconduct by some policemen, also assured members of the public that the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on international standards for policing, would be adhered to and respected.
Owoseni added: “In view of the desire by the IGP to sanitize the force, the three policemen involved in the act are being tried and adequate disciplinary actions would be taken against them at the end of the trial.”
He urged members of the public, who feel that their rights had been trampled upon, to report to the authority rather than taking laws into their hands. “When all of us do this, we have a better society,” said Owoseni.
