At least 21 people, among
them women and babies, were yesterday burnt beyond recognition in a motor
accident which occurred on Ile-Ife-Ibadan Road in Osun State.
The accident, which
involved an IVECO truck and an 18-seater bus with Lagos registration number:
MUS 702 XH, occurred about noon.
Three babies and their
mothers were among those who lost their lives in the accident.
It was learnt that the
bus rammed into the tanker carrying Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) otherwise called
diesel which just made a U-turn on the road.
On impact, the bus
burst into flames while all its occupants were burnt beyond recognition.
Efforts of passers-by
and sympathisers to rescue the victims proved abortive as they could not move near
the fire.
Also, fire-fighters did
not arrive at the scene on time.
When the fire went
down, medical personnel from the Seventh-Day Adventist Hospital, Ile-Ife,
rescued two persons. But the two victims died on their way to the hospital.
When our correspondent
got to the scene, officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and
security agencies were yet to get there.
A witness, Oladele
Mutiu, said that if the fire-fighters had arrived earlier, some of the victims
might have been saved.
