TWO
people were, on Tuesday morning, injured and one other missing, as a
local passenger boat capsized at Coconut Island, Lagos State.
The
missing person, identified as Idris Adekunle and others, were said to
have fallen into the sea after their canoe capsized from the effect of a
bigger tug boat.
The
boat was conveying passengers from Iba area of the state to Tin Can
Island when it encountered a tug boat, which was trying to tow a ship
to the harbour.
Rescue
workers rescued some passengers alive, thinking the operation had
finished, until an elder brother to the missing person raised the alarm
that his younger brother was in the boat and that they had not seen him.
The
image maker in charge of the National Emergency Management Agency
(NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident to the Nigerian
Tribune, said efforts had started again to search for the missing man.
Farinloye
said: “The local boat ran into a tug boat belonging to NPA, which was
towing a ship to harbour and the wave swept off the boat and it became
unbalanced and capsized .
“Two
of passengers who had minor injuries were taken to hospital, treated
and had been discharged, while others had gone to their respective
destinations.
“Later,
the elder brother of Idris appeared and said his brother was missing.
As of now, search and rescue operations for the missing person is
ongoing. Many lives were saved, as the passengers wore life-saving
jackets, but some of them sustained injuries in an attempt to swim to
safety,” the NEMA spokesperson stated.
