Three suspects, including a cripple, were, however, arrested after the incident.
The incident occurred around 1.00 p.m, when worshippers of the church had just closed for service, as an unknown person allegedly threw an improvised explosive device (EID) on the church premises.
It was also gathered that in the suicide attack, which occurred at Kofar Nasarawa area of the city, a female bomber, in an attempt to lure some security men stationed by the North West University gate, ended up blowing herself up.
The suicide bomber, it was gathered, was blown up in an attempt to give sallah food to the security men, as they suspected foul play as a result of her desperation.
It was further gathered that the men took to their heels when they noticed that the female bomber was fast advancing towards them.
Shortly after, the bomb, which she concealed under hijab, suddenly exploded, leaving her dead in the process.
Outside the premises of St Charles Church, 16 persons were said to have sustained varying degrees of injury, while three suspects, including a cripple, were arrested by security agents.
According to an eyewitness, the suspected terrorists had laid siege at a primary school adjacent to the church, from where they hauled the explosive on the unsuspecting worshippers.
Sources hinted that four of the dead, a man, his wife, father and maid, had gone to the church for thanksgiving.
Speaking with journalists at the scene of the attack, the state Commissioner of Police, Adenrele Shinaba, said the incident left no fewer than five people dead, with eight injured, while three suspects were arrested.
In his reaction, the Catholic Bishop of Kano, Bishop John Namanza, described the attack as uncalled for.
He called on security agents and the state government to beef up security around the vicinity.
