Five robbers die in shoot-out with police

Five robbers die in shoot-out with police
Five suspected armed robbers met their waterloo at the weekend as they were gunned down during a fierce encounter with policemen in Ogun State. The suspects belonged to a gang of bandits numbering 12 that attacked Oluke, Okugbolu and Onireke areas of Agbado in Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident yesterday, disclosed that the suspected armed robbers stormed the areas on motorcycles.
Adejobi, in a statement issued in Abeokuta, said one of the suspects identified as Oladeinde Rasheed was arrested while some weapons were also recovered. Items recovered from the robbers, according to the PPRO, include five locally-made guns, 30 live cartridges, 12 expended cartridges, three laptops, jewelleries, five unregistered motorcycles, cutlasses, assorted charms and N85,000 cash.
He said: “The Police Anti-Crime Team attached to Agbado Division of Ogun State, responding to a distress call on Saturday 26th July, engaged some armed robbers numbering 12 in a gun battle at Oluke, Okugbolu and Onireke areas of Agbado about 06:20hrs, leaving five of the robbers dead while one of them was arrested with their weapons and others fled with bullet wounds.
“The armed robbers had launched attack on the people of these areas when a call was made to the Divisional Police Officer in Agbado Division who then put a call to alert his men on routine patrol to race down to the area where the robbers were caught in the act of robbery. In the process of combing the area, members of the Vigilante Service of Ogun State in the area rendered assistance to the police team.”
Adejobi added that the 26-year-old suspect arrested would help the police to get the fleeing members of the gang. “According to police preliminary investigation, it was gathered that the robbers went to the remote areas on motorcycles with arms and that they had been terrorising the people of the area for a long time; particularly snatching cars and bikes from people in the area and other parts of Agbado community,” he added.
The PPRO restated the readiness of the command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Ikemefuna Okoye to tackling crimes and social vices in the state and provide adequate security for all and sundry.
