Police detectives investigating the alleged criminal
activities of suspected Nigerian billionaire kidnapper Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike
aka Evans, almost danced in exultation after the suspect this week finally caved
in and revealed the source of the cache of arms found on him.
The detectives were interested in the arms because
it one of the exhibits and evidences to prove that Evans had been active, not
just in kidnapping, but also armed robbery.
After his confession, Evans was made to take another
series of pictures with the weapons.
According to the suspect, the caches of arms do not
belong to only him. He said it belonged to him and one Uche, now deceased. They
allegedly contributed money to buy them for criminal purposes.
Evans confessed that they procured the weapons at
Onitsha, Anambra State, after the gang members decided to attack and abduct the
owner of the Young Shall Grow Motors, Chief Vincent Obiano. It turned out to be
a botched abduction.
The current price of the AK47 rifle recovered from
Evans is N700,000.
A police source said: “The suspect has finally told
us how and where he got the rifles and magazines. He said the weapons belonged
to him and Uche. He said Uche died when they attempted to abduct the owner of
the Young Shall Grow Motors. He said that in that very operation, he lost three
of his gang members. At least two policemen were killed during gun battle with
Evans’ gang on that fateful day.”
Speaking on that fateful operation, Evans reportedly
said: “It was during that operation that Emeka, Uche and Hutch man died. It was
only me and Nnamdi that survived. Since Uche had already died, I decided to
convert all the weapons to myself. It was after that operation; I formed
another gang and continued with kidnapping of people in Lagos.
“Uche died at the scene of the gun battle, while
Emeka died inside our vehicle as we tried to escape. We thought Emeka would
survive, we drove straight to Ejigbo. It when we got to Ejigbo that we checked
and realised that Emeka was dead. He died inside the car.”
It will be recalled that Ejigbo was one of the detention
facilities that Evans took detectives to on Sunday.
Evans said: “When Nnamdi and I realised Emeka was
dead, we left in the car and called another of my boys to bring another car. When
they brought the car, we transferred all the weapons. Nnamdi and I abandoned Emeka’s corpse inside
the first car. It was after that fatal operation that Nnamdi and I parted ways;
I went to form another gang and Nnamdi left and formed his own gang.”
Evans said that they left the car, with the corpse
of Emeka at Ejigbo area of Lagos because it was ridden with bullets. He claimed
not to know what later became of the car or the corpse inside.
After he formed that gang, he confessed to have
taken part in robbery of bullion vans eastern parts of the country. He had
robbed bullion vans, filled with money, belonging to banks in Enugu an Abia
states. He confessed that he had robbed bullion vans twice in Abia State and
Enugu just once.
He also claimed to have made N7.5million on each of
the bullion van robbery.
A police chipped in: “He said there was no much
money in robbery; that kidnapping was the best.”
Aside from revealing where and how he got the cache
of arms, Evans also allegedly told policemen that he bought the leg chains,
which he uses on his victims, at Anambra State, Okija junction for N1, 500.
“Uche and I bought the weapons at Onitsha, Anambra
State,” said Evans.
Police investigations revealed that Nnamdi died some
years ago during a robbery operation.
The police said: “We’re presently looking for
another Emeka, who is among Evans’ current gang members. This Emeka had been on
the run since the arrest of Evans. The said Emeka and Uche are the two people
that used to man the detention centres for Evans.”
