Two truck drivers, William Umoh
Udor, 40, and Obong Lazarus Isaiah, 29, have been arraigned before an Ikeja
High Court, Lagos for allegedly raiding and robbing a traditional mid-wife, Mrs
Esther Adeniran, N638, 000 and other valuables.
The duo, who pleaded not guilty, was
arraigned on a six count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed
robbery contrary to Sections 297 and 295(2)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos
State, 2011.
According to the prosecution, T.M.
Asafa, the accused persons and others now at large committed the offence on
August 2, 2015 around 5am at No 8, Ologun Street, Ijegun, Lagos.
Consequently, Udor was arraigned on
a five count bordering on conspiracy, robbery and armed robbery, while Lazarus
was also docked on one count of neglect to prevent felony.
However, while being led in evidence
to testify before the court, Adeniran said the two men who robbed her were
familiar faces.
According to her, she had, at some
point, assisted one of their wives during child delivery at her traditional
medicine centre.
Adeniran said that she recognised
the two men since their faces weren’t covered and that Lazarus' wife had given
birth in her clinic before, while Udor came to visit the new baby and mother.
She said that the duo alongside
others now at large, came into her apartment fully armed. The gained access into
the apartment through her kitchen window, and ordered her to lie face-down.
Adeniran said: “Six armed men came
in through the kitchen window. Udor ordered me to lie face down. He threatened
to rape me if I didn’t bring out money. I pleaded with him that I was pregnant.
He also threatened to shoot me and my four children. I fearfully showed
them the place where I kept N600, 000, which I collected the previous day from
our monthly contributions. They took the money, 7 phones and my gold jewelry.”
Adeniran further said that the
robbers also attacked her nurses who were at the apartment at the time.
Meanwhile, when the robbers left her
apartment, shocked at the huge sum being catered away from her, she chased
after the robbers and began screaming for help.
Fortunately, the Landlord Association
in the community and members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) ran after
them. While others escaped, the two defendants were arrested. She said that no
money was found on them during the arrest.
Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye adjourned
further hearing on the matter till June 15, 2017.
