Operatives attached to the Inspector General of
Police (IGP) Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT), have arrested two men in
connection with the abduction of a Muslim cleric in Kogi State.
The two suspects are Suleiman Isah 24, a native of
Ankpa Kogi State and Musa Mohammed 31, also a native of Ankpa Local Government
Area of Kogi State.
According to the police, the two suspects are part
of the gang that abducted Alhaji Jibrin Idris, an Islamic scholar. The said
Idris is an Imam at Enabo Town Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State. The
Imam was abducted on February 21, while he was going to mosque for early
morning prayers.
The gang kidnappers, who abducted the Imam in Kogi
State, fled to Enugu State, after collecting ransom. The suspects were said to
have allegedly confessed to the kidnapping of the Chief Imam at Enabo in Ankpa
district. They also mentioned the remaining two gang members at large as Bashir
and Mangal.
The phone, used for the ransom negotiation by the
kidnappers had been recovered. According to the police, efforts are ongoing to
arrest the fleeing two members.
The IRT operatives, led by an Assistant Commissioner
of Police (ACP), Mr Abba Kyari, were said to have tracked and swooped on Isah
and Mohammed after three months on their trail.
A police source said: “The Islamic scholar, Alhaji
Jibrin Idris was kidnapped on February 21. He was released after payment of
ransom. Subsequently, the IGP, Ibrahim Idris, ordered that a massive manhunt be
launched by IRT operatives for the kidnappers. After three months of
unrelenting follow up, the kidnappers, who earlier escaped to Enugu State after
collecting ransom in February. They fled to Enugu State after realizing that
IRT operatives were closing in on them. One of them was grabbed on May 29, at
Ayinba Town Kogi State and the other at Mile Enugu State.”
