Motorcyclist stabs passenger to death over N50

Homicide detectives at Meiran Police Station, Lagos State have arrested a commercial motorcyclist for stabbing his passenger to death over N50 dispute.
Witnesses said that the motorcyclist, identified as Tansun Usman, from Katsina State, picked his passenger from Meiran area, heading to NEPA Junction. Usman, however, forgot to tell his passenger, a Yoruba man, that he did not have ‘change’ for any other denomination, aside from N50. When the passenger got to NEPA Junction, he gave Usman N500.

Usman got angry, saying the passenger must give him N50 note. The passenger then asked for his N500, snatched if from Usman and started walking away.
The motorcyclist caught up with him, held him and demanded that he should pay for his fare. “As the Okada rider (commercial motorcyclist) held the passenger, they started arguing and shouting. Suddenly the passenger slapped Usman. Usman brought out a dagger, which he apparently had on him and stabbed his passenger on the right hand side of his stomach. Sympathisers rushed the man to the hospital, but he died the following day, which was Saturday,” a police source said.
Policemen from Meiran, who were invited by witnesses, arrested Usman. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident. She said: “The Okada rider is 20 years old and the passenger is also 20 years old. The motorcyclist picked the passenger from Abule-Egba, heading to Meiran. They agreed on N100. When they reached Meiran, the passenger gave Usman N500, but Usman said he did not have change.
The passenger asked him to look for search, but he insisted he didn’t have. The passenger asked him if he would collect N50, but Usman refused. That was how he brought out a dagger and stabbed his passenger. He was rushed to the hospital, but died 30 minutes later.
“Usman later confessed that sometime last year, his motorbike was stolen, he had later travelled to his state, for charm and the dagger was part of what was given to him. It was a poisonous dagger. Immediately he stabbed the man, the man did not last. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).”
