Ex-NURTW chair, ‘Tokyo’, escapes assassination
Former Oyo State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Akinsola aka Tokyo escaped being lynched in Ibadan when suspected thugs attacked him and his supporters.
Akinsola and some of his supporters were at the residence of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Haruna Suara, to honour an earlier invitation when the attempt was made on his life. At least, six of his supporters were injured.
The police, who quickly intervened, however, whisked Tokyo away in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).

Speaking on the encounter, Tokyo told journalists that he was at the Chief Imam’s house when some people attempted to kill him.
He said: “My supporters were attacked while I was being attended to by the Imam in his house at Agbeni area of Ibadan. “Thank God that my supporters were outside when I was inside with the Imam, maybe I would have been dead by now.”
Among Tokyo’s supporters that sustained varying degrees of injury were Bashiru Saheed, Agboola Rasak, Liadi Akande, Rilwan Akinsola and Alani Adaramola. According to a witness, the over 20 suspected thugs were led by one Afeez Oyerinde, the son of the state NUTRW Chairman, Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde aka Fele. The suspected thugs were said to have arrived the scene of the incident with several dangerous weapons and unleashed terror on Akinsola’s supporters.

He told journalists on phone that the Tokyo group was at NTA Ibadan programme (2nd Ramadan Lecture of the late AbdulAzeez Arisekola-Alao) when the incident happened. Fele asked the police to conduct investigation into the matter and get the video clip of the programme and check the timing of the said attack.
He said: “We have met Alhaji Tokyo on several occasions and we have never attacked him. We are not a violent union again. We will continue to maintain the peace in the state.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident. He said: “The state police command reacted swiftly to the call for reinforcement over the issue by the Mapo Police station where it was reported. The command dispatched combined police teams and an Armed Personnel Carrier to the scene of the incident to
