Some people
under the aegis of Concerned Igbo Leaders in Lagos State have asked the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest a red cap
chief who has been defrauding innocent citizens.
In a statement made available to journalists, Chief Nwike Ezeachi, Coordinator of Concerned Igbo Leaders in Lagos State, alleged that the chief, an Igbo man, had come out of his hiding and was attempting to defraud some politicians. Ezeachi is also not happy that the alleged criminal activities of the chief were rubbing off badly on other Igbo chiefs in the state.
According to him, the unnamed chief was declared wanted by the EFCC, after he defrauded a Turkish citizen to the tune of $250,000 (about N49,987,500) scam.
Although the chief disappeared, his accomplice was arrested and jailed. He said: “A number of discredited Igbo men whose criminal records are well known have been masquerading as leaders with different appellations in the state and also embarking on extortion and deceit all in the name of credible Igbo leaders.
“These unscrupulous elements have been extorting huge sums of money from politicians in the state desperate to win elections. Unfortunately, these politicians do not know their criminal records.
We are particularly concerned with one of them who claims to be a leader in Ikeja area of the state. This man is wanted over a $250,000 scam committed in 2010. He and members of his gang advertised on the internet that they had used rail scraps for sale.
“A Turkish citizen, Yildirim Babadogan, later petitioned the EFCC in 2010 after a member of the gang…, along with three others, swindled him of over $250,000 under the pretence that they were selling used rail parts.”
Ezeachi said the accused was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment, adding: “We urge security agents, especially operatives of the EFCC to take immediate steps to arrest this suspect and advise these politicians clamouring for his support to be careful.”
