Family members of an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil
Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Howell Obia, have petitioned the Edo State
police commissioner over his disappearance.
Obia’s elder sister, Mrs.
Sandra Nwonye, hid fiancée, Judith Agbaje, said in the petition that the
man was deployed to Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital in August 2015
on special duties.
They said Obia was only heard from shortly after his arrival in Port
Harcourt and up till March 8, 2016 when he told them that he was on a
vessel “onshore,” carrying out national assignment on the high seas.
The family members added that apart from calls, text messages sent to
his GSM lines since then were neither answered nor replied. According
to them, one of his close friends and colleague in Port Harcourt had
confirmed that he had not also heard from Obia. “He joined the civil
defence corps five years ago and was posted to Benin the state capital
before his deployment.
In December, he sent me some money and promised to visit but he never
came. “We went to the NSCDC offices in Benin City and Port Harcourt and
the authorities did not tell us anything satisfactory about his
disappearance except, of course, to impute blame on him,” Nwonye said.
Also, Agbeye said: “We were going to get married and he said he would be
in Benin the weekend we last heard from him.
