Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, yesterday promised
that police would not sweep the alleged killing of a commercial bus
driver, Muyiwa Ijaduola, under the carpet.
Ijaduola was allegedly killed
by a policewoman, Corporal Daba Abagun, attached to Igando Igando
Police Station on Sunday. Abagun reportedly requested N200 from the
driver, who offered only N100.
But the corporal angrily dragged him down from the bus and pushed him
into the gutter after a heated argument. Witnesses said Ijaduola hit
his head against the culvert and died before help could reach him.
Police had denied Abagun was responsible for the driver’s death. They
claimed that he was epileptic. But the family said Ijaduola had no
history of epilepsy.
However, Owoseni, who spoke during a visit to Igando area, according
to the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Ozoani Chukwuma, said
investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of Ijaduola’s death.
He said: “Whoever is found culpable after investigations will face
the law.” Chukwuma said Ijaduola’s body was in the mortuary pending the
conduct of a post-mortem examination.
