Another boat capsizes in Lagos:28 on board, 27 rescued

A boat conveying 28 passengers has capsized in Ikorodu Area of Lagos State.

New Telegraph learnt that the incident occurred at Origin Jetty, Ikorodu few metres away from the jetty.
An official of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), who confined in New Telegraph, said the incident occurred when the ‎boat rammed into wooden logs on the waterway.
The source added that 27 passengers have been rescued out of 28 people in the boat by LASWA water guards.
 The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Michael Akindele who confirmed the incident said preliminary Investigation by the its Response Team revealed that the boat took off from Ikorodu en route Victoria Island.
  He said the boat ought to have carried about 21 passengers but rather opted to carry 28 persons.
  "The driver of the boat was said to be on high speed when it collided with some submerged log of woods resulting to the mishap.
  "Emergency responders such as the Lagos State Water Ways Authority, Nigeria inland water ways Authority, LASEMA Emergency Response Team, LASAMBUS, Nigeria Police responded promptly to the incident. At the end about 27 persons were recued while one sead body was recovered" he added.
  Akindele disclosed that proper investigation would be conducted on the incident, and advising the boat operators to avoid over speeding and to always complies with safety regulations on the waterways to avoid loss of lives.
  He warned boat operators to shun over speeding, adding that they should comply with safety rules.
