Fresh information from detectives attached to the Lagos State Police
Command shows that Jafairu Sogei, who allegedly slit his wife’s throat
at Oshodi while she slept, initially pretended to be insane after his
arrest.
Sogei, 50, was said to have poisoned his wife’s food and later slit
her throat while she slept because he wanted to make sure she died. This
followed years of beating the wife, identified as Roselyn Sogei.
He was said to have shared the poisoned food with his wife, but later
took an antidote. He killed his wife and tried to pin the murder on his
16-yearold son, Richmond Sogei.
It was Richmond who found his mother’s body soaked in blood. He also
found his father vomiting black stuff in the bathroom. Richmond also
said that the gate to the house was locked. He added that nobody could
have come in or left the house.
Sogei attempted to bolt, but neighbours held him and alerted the
police. He was said to have pretended to be mentally unbalanced after
his arrest, but policemen refused to fall for his antics. He later
collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.
Speculation is that the antidote apparently didn’t work as Sogei
expected. Yesterday, Sogei was being guarded by policemen at the Falomo
General Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, where he was receiving treatment. A
police source said that he was unconscious.
The source added that doctors were still trying to revive the
suspect, who became unconscious shortly after he was taken into police
custody on Friday. “The suspect initially acted as if he was insane by
shouting ‘chemical! chemical!
I’m dying!’ He was unable to stand without support; then he suddenly
collapsed,” the source said. Roselyn’s relatives said Sogei slaughtered
their daughter, disposed the knife used to commit the crime as well as
cleaned the blood stains to erase any trace after committing the crime.
They felt it was premeditated murder. Denying the allegations, the
brother of the suspect, who refused to disclose his name, said Sogei was
attacked by the same people who murdered Roselyn.
The man said: “My brother told me that his wife, who was selling at
Ijora market, was indebted to some people and they had been calling her
in the middle of the night, asking her to pay their money. He told me
that they were the ones that killed his wife and poured a poisonous
substance into his mouth.”
A resident in the compound, who pleaded anonymity, said a new
discovery had it that Sogei set fire to the mattress and some household
items but the fire was extinguished by residents. The resident added
that the children of the couple fled their home since Friday of the
incident.
A house help, who lived with the family identified simply as Aishat,
said she ran away from the house because of the aggressive nature of
Sogei, whom she alleged was fond of beating his wife. She said: “I had
to run away from the family because of the man.
Every night, he would beat his wife. He used to visit herbalist and
burn different candles in the house. Since he lost his job as a trailer
driver, his wife had become the bread winner of the family.
“For many years, she paid the children’s school fees, even the one in
the university. She would pay the house rent and provide food for the
entire family. At a time, I said my madam didn’t deserve what she was
passing through.”
Another resident said that Roselyn was a hard working woman who would
wake up at 4.30am, leave for her shop at Ijora and return around 11pm
every day. “The woman had always tried to make sure that the effects of
her husband’s joblessness didn’t show.”
